Summary (MAL)

Haruhi Fujioka is a bright scholarship candidate with no rank or title to speak of—a rare species at Ouran High School, an elite academy for students of high pedigree. When she opens the door to Music Room #3 hoping to find a quiet place to study, Haruhi unexpectedly stumbles upon the Host Club. Led by the princely Tamaki, the club—whose other members include the “Shadow King” Kyouya, the mischievous Hitachiin twins, and the childlike Haninozuka “Honey” and his strong protector Mori—is where handsome boys with too much time on their hands entertain the girls in the academy.

In a frantic attempt to remove herself from the hosts, Haruhi ends up breaking a vase worth eight million yen and is forced into becoming the eccentric group’s general errand boy to repay her enormous debt. However, thanks to her convincingly masculine appearance, her naturally genial disposition toward girls, and fascinating commoner status, she is soon promoted to full-time male host and plunged headlong into a glitzy whirlwind of elaborate cosplays, rich food, and exciting shenanigans that only the immensely wealthy Ouran Host Club can pull off.

My Review

Before I decided to watch Ouran High School Host Club, I was hesitant and somewhat uninterested in what the show had to offer. It might’ve been because the art didn’t appeal to me initially, or maybe I just didn’t understand how the show could’ve appealed to me. Little did I know that this gem of a series would keep me entertained throughout all of its 26 episodes.

Ouran High School Host Club is basically a show where a girl is forced to play the role of a host (instead of a hostess) in an attempt to work off her debt after accidentally breaking a priceless vase. However, the show’s charms come not from the narrative or plot itself, but mainly from each cast member’s chemistry and individual ability to be the most capable host. But boy were they really capable. Each character had a unique ability and charm, each time impressing and awing us viewers with their good-looks and talents.

While the show sets out to engage its viewers using comedy, it is also able to provide an engaging and well-crafted story. We constantly explore the characters’ pasts and see how the cast’s bonds constantly grow.

When viewed as a romance anime, it is definitely among the more playful styled romance shows. That isn’t to say that the romance is underwhelming, but rather the romance was endearing and appropriate as we see Haruhi and a certain someone (spoiler alert) slowly but playfully build their affections toward each other.

Generally, the story has a wholesome feel to it. Quoting from my past self that left a comment on a forum about the anime series,

I am just utterly awestruck by this anime. I was completely immersed in the story and loved every one of the characters. Now that its over I just feel completely empty..

Should I watch Ouran High School Host Club?

This same question was a question that I had asked myself many times whenever I stumbled upon this title. Eventually, I gave the first episode a try and I was immediately sold. If you’re the type to enjoy your casual comedies and can appreciate a good story regardless of old art styles, then these 7 stunning members of the Host Club are sure to entertain you. It has the fun tropes that a school setting would have to offer and elements of romance that are adorable. I would consider this anime a classic and recommend it to any fans of the school and comedy genre.
