As most of the Summer 2019 anime concludes, it is time to usher in other exciting new anime in the Fall 2019 anime season. As a fairly ordinary anime fan myself, I’ll be shedding light onto the upcoming anime an ordinary anime fan like myself would look out for in this new season.

What I’ll be paying attention to in my list are some of the more interesting premises and stories, or characters that look mighty interesting, and maybe even generic stories that left a good impression on me. Also, keep in mind that I have little to no background knowledge regarding these stories and their original sources. So without further ado, here’s my simple list of Fall 2019 anime that I’m looking out for.

5) Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious

I’m a sucker for Isekai anime, but have also seen a fair bit of them to know that I have my limits. This anime in particular seems to have taken a comical twist on the mainstream shenanigans of an Isekai. While its priority is clearly on comedy, the essence of the anime follows the basic overpowered protagonists of almost every Isekai anime, although arguably even more overpowered. And that’s fine, as long as I can have a ton of fun while watching my man fight villains with wits and style, and the occasional funny hahas.

4) Kabukichou Sherlock

Who doesn’t love a bit of crime mysteries? Better yet, the vibes which Kabukichou Sherlock seem to emit from its trailer reminded me of the cool classy aura of Cowboy Bebop. If this one manages to add in a few mind-blowing mysteries with a thrilling story, then it easily has the potential to be as cool as it tries to be. But this might all just be wishful thinking.

3) Ahiru no Sora

I love myself some sports anime, and this one looks quite decent. Sports in anime in recent years have become a lot more like characters with super powers rather than actual skill or wits in the game. While it is pretty commonplace to exaggerate abilities in such a way, I quite like my sports anime to be able to capture the essence of a sport and the competitive hardships. It seems like the direction this story will take will be more focused around the desire to play basketball than some exaggerated super powers, so maybe these delinquents are just what I need to reignite my passion for sports anime. Or not. Who knows.

2) Babylon

I put this as number 2 on my list because it seemed quite unique, with the potential to awe its audience. Mysteries and thrillers are always an interesting genre and Babylon tackles some pretty interesting topics of crime and corruption in the political world. Couple this with an anime’s exaggerated and stylish antiques where literally anything goes, this one can become either really good, or really bad. We’ll see.

1) Beastars

This has to be number 1 on my list, from just the style of the animation itself. It’s extremely rare for anime to use this style to animate the show, but from the trailer so far it actually looks smooth and fitting. The anime has stolen the spotlight with just its design, but what about the story? The story takes place in a very interesting world of animals, where the mechanics between animals and their interactions are put on display. As if the trailer wasn’t awe-inspiring enough, the genre it tackles are an interesting combination — Drama, Psychological, Slice of life, Shounen. I’m excited to see how this one turns out.

Honourable Mentions

While the following anime didn’t make it in my earlier list, all of the honourable mentions have the potential to ascend to become one of the greatest anime of Fall 2019. Of course, nobody knows yet how they will turn out. Hence these few will be some that I’m still looking forward to, albeit a little less than the earlier few anime for whatever reasons.

Special 7 – Special Crime Investigation Unit

Honestly this anime could’ve easily replaced Kabukichou Sherlock on the top list. I’m just a bit more biased towards Sherlock. But mystery crime thrillers are always a fun prospect, so this caught my attention as well. But the premise was rather convoluted for my liking, so it unfortunately didn’t make it to my earlier list. I honestly don’t have high hopes for this anime, but if it does go well, it could easily become a highly interesting anime.\

No Guns Life

Our protagonist’s head is the shape of a pistol. I can’t yet decide if that’s cool or not. Anyway, this anime is a madhouse production and so I’m expecting an action spectacle. The world it creates for itself is unique, radiating the vibes of a rough cyberpunk world. The only reason it fell off my list is because I rarely gave these types of show a chance, but I have to admit, the trailer was pretty exciting. Doesn’t this just remind you of Fullmetal Alchemist?

Are You The Only One Who Loves Me? (ORESUKI)

YES! The overly complicated antiques and relationships of the school genre. I mean who doesn’t love their convoluted protagonists that are always fumbling at the hands of romance? I surely do. This anime seems to be willing to look at the intricacies of romance or even just the school dynamics. Plus it does seem like it could become a comedic fiesta, so I am absolutely stoked for this one. I would’ve put this on the top list for sure but I’ve seen enough of these types of anime that I’ll have to be a bit more strict in my judgements.

High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even In Another World! (CHOYOYU!)

I’ve honestly never shied away from shows with an overpowered protagonist, or in this case protagonists. Especially when they’re overpowered in the intellectual sense instead of just overbearing power. I really hope that there’s going to be lots of witty humour and smart battles that are won from their intellectual abilities rather than just being gifted with overpowered powers.

Each of the anime mentioned are all promising products that I’m willing to spend time to watch. I didn’t include any second seasons or leftover anime from the previous seasons in case you were wondering, since I wanted to focus on the brand new anime. There were a few other anime which I dropped from the top list and the honourable mentions as they didn’t pique my interest enough.

Chances are, my list will NOT represent how good an anime will turn out to be. These are just my thoughts and initial impressions as to what these shows could offer. Do you agree with my list? Did I miss out on any promising anime? I hope I didn’t.

  1. I’m enjoying Cautious Hero, OreSuki, and High School Prodigies at the moment, and of course My Hero Academia, but that just started.

I’m just waiting for all of the Cautious Hero’s concerns to become true and it wasn’t him being overly cautious.

    • That would be a nice set up wouldn’t it. A pretty neat way to turn a comical hero into a pretty serious one.

I’m actually really hoping OreSuki turns out great, so it’s nice to hear that you’re enjoying it!
