Responsibility In Writing (100 Follower Appreciation Post)

There are over 7,700,000,000 individuals living, breathing and roaming this world, yet not a single one of us is exactly the same as the other. No, we are our own person, and amazingly enough, we all offer a little bit of something from our lives that only we can offer. That’s more than 7 billion unique characters in a single planet. Imagine that. Now imagine if all 7 billion of us were writers.

wow, 7 billion is a lot of zeros!

In the perspective of the writer, our words are our voice, and how we write these words become our personality. There’s an art to writing beautifully, and there’s beauty in writing artfully. It’s not just what you say, but a matter of how you say it. Writing is a conversation, and in it, our character defines who we are. And in the market of eternally-regurgitated words, personality that distinguishes writing is priceless.

A writer’s personality is what shapes their choice of words. Words can be emotional. They can affect our mood. They can be honest and they can be sincere. They can be energetic and revitalising, yet heartfelt and depressing. They can be malicious, yet filled with good intent. Ultimately, they have power. But with great power comes great responsibility.

As personal bloggers, our words are our identity. We spend hours curating the perfect words that resonate with our person, then lay it out there for others to scrutinise. Not only does our writing reflect upon us, it also influences our audience.

Ultimately, it is in both our personal and our audience’s best interests for us to be writing responsibly. There is a need to be mindful of the things we say, and understand our position as the voice that addresses a crowd. Just as how we should be mindful of what we say verbally, we should also be careful of what we say in writing.

That being said, writing responsibly doesn’t mean forsaking your own identity. It simply means to understand the things we talk about and to be aware of its implications. I guess what I’m trying to say is, writing is an art that requires a lot of care. So let’s practice that care. Yup, that’s it.

I hope this didn’t sound convoluted ;P

I wanted to write something meaningful as part of my 100 follower milestone, so I hope this post didn’t rub off in the wrong way.

Writing has given me an alternative voice. It has allowed me to interact and connect with all sorts of people from around the globe, and has even inspired me to become a better person. So thank you.

Thank you to the ones that actually read, thank you to the ones that take the time to comment, thank you to the ones that support with a like and also thank you to the ones that write. All of you inspire me on a daily basis. Writing is a lot of work, but I can confidently say that I love writing more than ever today, and it’s all thanks to you!

so thank you!

  1. Congratulations on reaching that milestone. I agree with a lot of this post and it’s something I had to hone in on for years. Whether it’s through my poetry, music projects, reporting news stories, writing fiction, or my reviews, I wanted to express my voice out there in multiple disciplines and to not be afraid of doing so. Keep at it, Tiger.

  2. That’s a pretty tall order! You seem to be successful at expressing your own voice. Sometimes keeping your own voice is hia difficult task, especially when you are not sure how others will take what you have to say (expert here on that). But I think it is better in the long run, both for you and for your readership.
