Releasing our Emotions through Music

In our technologically advanced digital era, we have accelerated our way of life and become accustomed to a faster lifestyle. Everything of today operates at a much faster pace than ever before, and while certainly complementing convenience, it’s not without compromise.

Ironically in this era of newfound convenience and ease, humankind continues to be busier than ever. Our lives are instead filled with the hectic hustle and bustle of an increasingly fast-paced and ever-demanding society. It is no exaggeration to say that our lifestyles have become much more chaotic.

As such, it is important to find serenity amidst the chaos, and what better way to do this than to indulge in music.

yes, music!

Some nights after a stressful day, I’d close my eyes and amidst the temporary bliss of a soothing darkness, various melancholic melodies would fill my mind.

Some days I’d stare out the window of a moving bus, and amidst the hustle and bustle of the people around me, certain soothing songs would appear in my head.

That’s because music is associated with our emotions, and the music we think of is often painted by our current state of mind. But at the same time, this concept would also work in reverse, whereby the music we choose to listen to can also create a desired state of mind.

I think music has a metaphysical power in the way it influences our psyche. When we’re idling, our mind tends to take us places. While we are often not in control of where our mind takes us to, music can be rather persuasive in leading our thoughts to a certain direction.

People suffer from a lot of stress and tolerate pain on a daily basis, and they suppress them to continue on with their lives and commitments. The bottling up of frustration and emotional fatigue is never a permanent solution. What music does is it becomes the medium that alleviates these feelings and provides a means for us to express these bottled up emotions as we indulge in the music.

In fact, I’m writing this now whilst listening to music as a form of release from the pent-up fatigue and frustration that my studies has imposed on me. There’s simply too much to do in an uncomfortably small period of time and my procrastination habits aren’t helping. So I decided to take some time off from my assignments and immerse myself in some relaxing music (talk about procrastination, am I right?).

I think the beauty of music is that it fills up the void and numbs the pain by serving as a form of soothing distraction and a supplementary form of our emotions. An hour’s worth of Japanese music was all it took, and now I’ve never felt better.

So I thought that perhaps while we’re all dealing with our own problems and fighting silent battles of our own, it wouldn’t hurt to remember that music will always be there for our indulgence, and it can definitely ease the pain.

If you’ve read this far, perhaps I could offer a small form of solace in your hectic lives with this song that a friend had introduced to me. Give it a listen and let me know if you liked it.

This piece by anNina is absolutely breathtaking.

Thank you for reading, and I hope you all have a stress-free weekend ahead!

  1. I completly agree with you. Music is a great outlet when in need of tranquility. It’s always good to step away from the frequent hustle and bustle of life to clear your head however, simply having the capacity to step away whenever the time calls is difficult. Thankfully, our good pal music is there to offer the extra shoulder in making that step! Music’s like my own carefree fiction seperated from the reins of reality. The knowledge that the leisure of such fiction exists is enough to even slightly calm me down in the midst of real-world chaos. Music is like a warm meal waiting for a person after a long, arduous hike up a mountain. It’s just plain welcoming and hearty no matter the tone of a song. Without music, having the ability to take a moment to breathe would be monstrously more difficult (for me). Music, in whichever form, always manages to grant reprieve of the looming stressfulness of life.

Okay, that’s enough from me. I’m basically reiterating what this post was about in my own words…Guess that shows how much I appreciated this post! Thanks! (Also, I loved the song! Definitely will research more into the artist! ^^)

  2. I completely agree with music being tied to emotions. Sometimes it’s nice to listen to music to let go out your anger, or to allow yourself to cry from a tragic event in your life. Music is great and can connect people’s emotions.
Hope you have a stress free weekend too.

  3. Music is the only drug I partake in, and I indulge all the time from relaxing to venting to putting myself in an introspective mindset, to motivating myself to writing…
    It’s very powerful.

On an anime related note, ever since I watched Fukumenkei Noise a few years ago I’ve used “In NO Hurry to Shout!” songs to vent frustration. I don’t get angry very often, but when I do usually blasting a couple of those songs will help me cool down.

It’s pretty amazing how consistent it is, and how consistent music in general is when it comes to manipulating / instilling emotions.

    1. It is isn’t it? That’s awesome, I’ll definitely have to check them out. I’m always in awe at what music does for me. I’m too dependant on my music, and I can’t imagine a life without it.

  4. I rattled excitedly when you mentioned that “the music we choose to listen to can also create a desired state of mind”. I have to admit, I am a very busy person. My state of mind is very hectic as I always love to plan the events and work that I must complete before the week ends. As such, my brain is constantly pumping ideas and scenarios making it both a curse and a gift. On lonely nights, it gets a little too much for me hence I’d usually put on my headphones and listen to soothing music as I stare out my window; observing the quiet neighbourhood. It helps me pace myself and puts me in a serene environment. Overall, I would say, this post is a very good read and I personally could relate heavily to it !!

    1. I think your lifestyle is very admirable, and music definitely does wonders to boost our creativity as well. I hope that you’ll let loose more often so that this unique creativity of yours turns out to be more of a gift than a curse. Thank you RoboNinj4, your enthusiasm for my post definitely made my day!

  5. Music is amazing. I feel like whenever I’m feeling crappy, I need to put on some music to make me relax and help me feel better. I love to play and sing as well and it always makes me happy to hear my own music bring joy to people, even if just a few.

    1. Sometimes music makes me feel crappier, while sometimes it makes me joyous, and that’s the beauty of it. It’s a great catalyst to get us to feel all sorts of things.

  6. You are absolutely right. Music is affecting the whole psyché and it’s an anti-stress tool I love to use when I am feeling stressed or depressed (or even joyful). It enhances or “cures” my mood.

I love World of Warcraft music, I usually combine chilling in some location and listening to calming music they have there. It makes me feel so damn good >.<

    1. Wow you like WoW music? You’ve definitely got fine taste in music. You should try listening to some Oldschool Runescape music (the orchestra versions) as well! I’m sure you’ll love some of those whether or not you’ve played it.
